It’s a New Day

Abraham Maslov observed: “In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who coined Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory to explain human motivation.

In what area of your life are you being called to step forward into growth?

American New Thought writer, teacher, and leader Ernest Holmes observed: “Principle is not bound by precedent. There is no law in the Universe that seeks to perpetuate old limitations, but there is a Law which responds to our greatest vision at the exact level of that vision.”

Friends, nothing in life says you must keep walking down the same street. But if you do keep walking down the same street, expect to keep arriving at the same place! Be careful where you’re headed. You might get there.

A great poem by Portia Nelson illustrates this well:

Chapter One: “I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am helpless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I am in the same place. But it isn’t my fault. It still takes me a long time to get out.

Chapter Three: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Chapter Four: I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Chapter Five: I walk down another street.”

In Portia’s poem, the hole creates suffering for her, but it’s the street she always walks down and thus continues to walk down because it is what she knows. It is comfortable and feels safe. Humans lean toward doing what they know because the unknown seems scary.

How fortunate are we to remember we have God, Spirit, Divine, The Universe, The Thing Itself, The Way, Theao, The Force, or Source Energy? Whatever you choose to call it – we have that.

St. Teresa of Avila observed, “Whoever has God lacks nothing.” The Course In Miracles tells us, “If you knew who walked beside you at all times, on the path that you have chosen, you could never experience fear or doubt again.” That’s your key to ease and grace on the path of your extraordinary evolution: remember the Divine is your constant companion, the Invisible Guest, always with you.

As Maslow observed, “In any given moment, we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” What will you choose?

It’s a new day!

And so it is.
